How to Keep Your Garbage Disposal Smelling Nice and Clean

If you’ve already checked out all of our tips and tricks to make your Phoenix apartment beautiful, you may want to show it off to your friends. It’s hard to feel proud of your apartment if your sink smells gross, though. Luckily, there are several easy things you can do to keep your garbage disposal smell nice and clean. Learn about some of our favorite methods below.

Lemon Peels

This method is great because it’s extremely natural, and doesn’t require you to buy a lot of cleaning supplies. If you don’t already have lemons on hand, you can pick a few up at your local grocery store or farmer’s market– it won’t cost much at all. Just cut the lemon peels into little strips, and drop them into the disposal. Then run hot water, turn the disposal on, and enjoy the clean citrus smell without any chemicals.

Ice Cubes and Salt

This option, much like the first one, is extremely convenient because it only relies on common kitchen supplies that you’re already likely to have on hand. Kosher salt works best, but you can get by with smaller grains in a pinch. Just drop several ice cubes into your disposal, and follow that with about a handful of salt. Flip your disposal on for about 10 seconds or so, then turn it off.

Dish Soap

Another common kitchen supply that can help clean your drain is regular liquid dish soap. For this one, put the stopper in your drain, then make a nice bubbly mixture of dish soap and hot water in the sink. Once the soap is mixed in with the water, and you have a pretty good amount in your sink, pull the stopper and run your disposal.

Disposal-Specific Products

There are tons of products that have been made specifically to clean out garbage disposals, and they’re all great options. You can likely find them at your local grocery store or supermarket, and you could always order them online to get them within a couple of days. The instructions will be slightly different depending on the type of product you choose, but there will be step by step directions on the packaging.

Bleach

Lots of people use bleach to clean out their garbage disposal. Personally, bleach makes us a little bit nervous because the chemicals are so harsh, but it will almost definitely do the trick in case of an emergency. We strongly recommend using a mild bleach for this job, or at least cutting it with some water before you pour it into your pipes.

Baking Soda and Vinegar

Equal parts of baking soda and vinegar (about half of a cup of each) should kill the smell. Put the baking soda into your disposal first, then add the vinegar, and let it foam up for about 15 minutes. Then turn on the disposal and run the hot water until the mixture has been washed away.
