Fun Birthday Decorating Tips for Parties at Your Apartment

For some people, throwing a party in their Phoenix apartment is one of their favorite things. We see tons of questions about party decorations from people who are looking for apartment tips, and it’s a great opportunity to make special memories. Show off your new apartment and celebrate a birthday at the same time by going all out for the big event. These ideas will help get an apartment of any size ready for a memorable birthday party.

Reorganize Your Floor Plan – Depending on how many guests you expect, floor space might be at a premium in your apartment. If you find yourself wondering how exactly you can accommodate enough people for your party, the answer might be as simple as moving some furniture. Your living room is probably set up with the TV as a focal point, but you might not need to watch anything during the party. In that case, you can rearrange the furniture into more of a circle so people can mingle. Try pushing things a little bit closer to the walls, or even moving a few items back into your bedroom for the day.

Check the Temperature – This isn’t necessarily a decoration, exactly, but it will go a long way toward keeping all of your guests comfortable in your home. If you plan on having a lot of people over, you can expect the temperature in your home to raise a few degrees. You might want to set the thermostat just a little bit lower than usual to make up for all the body heat. This is especially true if you usually keep your apartment at a level that might not be comfortable for most people.

Create a Nice Snack Spread – The right birthday treats can add little pops of color all over your apartment, and people will certainly appreciate having something to eat. Most people tend to throw all of their food on a single table, but this can create a traffic jam and make that area get congested. If you have appetizers and other finger foods, you can spread them out over a few different locations like your kitchen, coffee table, and more. Just don’t forget to include some plates, napkins, and whatever else people will need to enjoy their food.

Pick a Drop Zone  – People might come in with purses or outerwear, especially depending on the season. They probably won’t want to hold onto those things throughout the whole party, but you don’t want random stuff scattered all over your apartment, either. Pick a corner, or let people put things on your bed to reduce clutter. Since it’s a birthday party, you might also want to have a decorated table where everyone can leave any gifts they bring with them.

Make Pretty Drinks – If you’re going to have adult beverages at your party, you could make one large batch of something special and memorable. You can serve welcome glasses of champagne, or have a beautiful glass jug full of your signature cocktail. Even if you want to avoid alcoholic drinks, there are plenty of other great options. Sparkling grape juice, lemonade with berries, or water with fresh fruit in it are all great ways to satisfy people’s thirst and add style to your place at the same time. No matter what you serve, think about how you want to serve it.

Let Guests Label Their Own Glasses – This is right in line with the previous point. If you really want to go above and beyond, buy a bunch of plain, inexpensive wine glasses and some glass markers to go with them. People will have fun decorating their glass so that it will work as a built-in activity in addition to a nice aesthetic touch. If you don’t want to spend that much money, some colorful disposable cups and a marker or two will work just as well.

Embrace the Big Number – No matter how old the guest of honor is turning, decorate your space with the number of their new age (as long as they wouldn’t be offended by this). You can find balloons, napkins, plates, and more with their age on it, especially if they’re hitting a big milestone. If you have trouble finding something that’s already prepared, you can always get something custom printed or get crafty. Of course, you’ll want to make sure you get the number right.

Use Confetti – This is an inexpensive option, but it may lead to a significant amount of cleanup after the fact. It’s worth considering if you’re on a pretty tight budget but have plenty of time on your hands. You can get glitter or confetti and spread it on a few select surfaces within your apartment, especially around (but not in) drinks and snacks. If you really want to go all out, you can even get some confetti poppers and let people use them after singing happy birthday. As always, please be conscious of the noise you’re making during this part of the celebration.

Use Balloons – Even if you don’t want to get special balloons with the guest of honor’s age on them, this decoration is a birthday classic. One of the best things about decorating with balloons is that it gives you so many options on how to do it. You can get an inexpensive bag of them to blow up yourself and scatter around the apartment, or invest in some fancy ones from a local party supply store. If you can get your balloons filled with helium, it’s a great idea to hang pictures of the birthday person on their ribbons.

Use Glow Sticks – If your party is taking place at night, you can add a fun twist to the lighting in your place by scattering glow sticks all over the apartment. Buying a pack of glowing bracelets requires almost no work at all on your part, and it turns everyone in attendance into part of the decorative effort. Even if it’s a daytime event, a well-placed glow stick can work wonders. Try putting them in the ice bucket– you need to keep drinks cold anyway, and this makes a necessary step more fun and festive. If you’re feeling up for it, you can even put glow sticks inside of balloons before you tie them off.
