Clever Ways to Hide Wires and Cords in Your Apartment

When you’re looking for design ideas for your apartment, one of the most important things you can do is blend your technology naturally into your living space. A mess of wires can make your apartment look disorganized even if everything else is clean.

Luckily, home design experts have been solving this problem for a few years now, and there are some great solutions available. Follow the five tips and tricks below to hide your cords and give your apartment a clean, modern, organized look.

1. Hide a Charging Station

The nightstand is one of those areas in any apartment that can turn into a jumbled mess of wires in a hurry. If you charge all of your electronics at your bedside, you’ll probably have at least a few cords vying for space here. This could apply anywhere else you charge your devices, too.

The solution is to plan your charging station in a way that makes it look clean and organized. The easiest way is to hide it away in a drawer. To do this, just put a small hole in the back of a drawer and run a power strip out of the back. Open the drawer to access all of your plugs in the power strip, then close it to hide the mess.

It’s important to make sure that you give your cord enough slack that it doesn’t pull out of the wall when you open the drawer. Buy a cord that’s a foot or two longer than you think you’ll need to be safe.

Another option is to buy a charging station that can go on top of your nightstand. With either of these workarounds, you’ll only have one cord left to worry about: the one that goes into your charging station. There are some easy ways to conceal this, too– read on to see what they are.

2. Hang Something Behind Your Desk

Wires and cords can build up fast at your desk, especially when you’ve got an intense computer setup. This might include a computer, multiple speakers, multiple monitors, a docking station, and more. All of those components take a lot of cords, which are probably hanging in a disorganized web of cables behind your desk.

Depending on where your desk is and what kind of desk you have, all of those cords might not be very easy to see. If they’re becoming an eyesore, though, there’s an easy fix. Simply cut some fabric or any other material, and hang it from the back of your desktop. Connect it to the legs of your desk as well to make sure it’s not too loose back there.

You can use a fun pattern or color to add a pop of flair or match something to your desk to create a more traditional look.

3. Hide Your Router Behind Decorations

You’ve most likely got a wifi router somewhere in your apartment, and all the wires that come with it. Routers generally work better when they’re up high, which means you have to run cords to a high point in your apartment. Try the top of a bookshelf, then put books in front of it to conceal the device. Affix the cords to the side of the bookshelf to keep them out of the way.

4. Hide them in a Cable Concealer

Sometimes you have to run cables right across a wall (for example, to get them to a wall-mounted TV). In that case, you can use a cable concealer to keep the wires safe, together, and out of sight.

Pick a cable concealer that matches your trim for maximum discretion, or choose a color that complements your design scheme and makes some artistic angles. If you pick the right concealer and position it correctly, people might not even register it when they look around your apartment.

5. Wrangle Cords with Common Supplies

There’s a good chance you already have some supplies you can use to help keep your cords organized. For example, binder clips and tape are great at bundling cords together and affixing them to the sides of furniture.

If you’re looking for something a little bit more secure, zip ties are extremely inexpensive. Once you’ve bundled cords together, it’s easy to run them up the sides of furniture. If there’s no good place on your furniture to use a binder clip, zip tie, or tape, try an adhesive plastic hook to hang your wires.
