5 Ways to Spend Your Memorial Day in Phoenix

Phoenix has a lot to offer for its residents, and this Memorial Day weekend is no exception to that rule! The weather is perfect during spring and early summer, so daytime and evening activities are as pleasant as ever. Memorial Day weekend is the perfect opportunity to enjoy your time outside before we head toward the dog days of summer. Here are five of our favorite activities to enjoy over the extended weekend.

1 – Go for a Hike

There are all kinds of great places to hike around Phoenix, and Memorial Day weekend will give you plenty of time to try a few. Here are some of our favorite options:

  1. White Tank Mountain National Park – Just west of the city, this hiking hotspot is home to all sorts of treasures. You’ll find petroglyphs from the ancient Hohokam tribe. These rock carvings would be beautiful all on their own, and they’re even better in the surrounding desert scenery.
  2. Camelback Mountain – One of the most popular hiking options in Phoenix is Echo Canyon Trail on Camelback Mountain. It can be a somewhat intense hike and takes two or three hours to make the round trip. You’ll be rewarded with great views of Phoenix and the surrounding landscape.
  3. South Mountain Park – The largest municipal park in the United States is home to over 50 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding.

2 – Partake in Arizona Restaurant Week

The spring edition of Phoenix Restaurant week actually wraps up the Sunday before Memorial Day, but you can still enjoy it by dining out on the first two days of your three day weekend. It’s a statewide affair, and there will be plenty of participants around Phoenix.

3 – Go to the Zoo and Botanical Gardens

The Phoenix Zoo is conveniently located right next to the Desert Botanical Garden, and the combination of these two attractions offers plenty to see during a day of walking around. Go to the zoo to see animals from all over the world, ranging from African lions to American bald eagles. Popular exhibits include monkeys, Komodo dragons, and multiple types of flamingos. Once you’ve seen plenty of animals, head over to the botanical garden, where you can see beautiful dessert displays of cacti and succulents.

4 – Phoenix Art Museum

The museum is normally closed on Mondays but will be open on May 27th to celebrate Memorial Day. As usual, the museum will be full of beautiful exhibits from many different genres and places in the world. Special exhibits for Memorial Day 2019 will include Agnes Pelton: Desert Transcendentalist. These abstract arts will help you see the desert landscape around Phoenix from a completely fresh perspective.

5 – Run a Virtual Race

Memorial Day 2019 will be the first iteration of an annual virtual race. This is a great way to burn off all the calories you consume during weekend barbeques. Since it’s a virtual race, you can decide which length you want then choose where you walk, jog, or run. We’d recommend picking one of the many trails around Phoenix!
