How to Save Money on Cleaning Supplies

Cleaning is a necessary part of life. It’s something we all must do and unless you have the money to hire a full-time maid, it’s something you must accept. There’s one thing you don’t have to accept though: spending too much on cleaning supplies!

Here are some simple ways to save money on cleaning supplies.

Give store brand cleaning supplies a shot

In some cases, store brand cleaning supplies are exactly the same as brand name. In fact, they’re sometimes made in the same factory and are literally identical except for the packaging. This isn’t always the case though. Take a look at the ingredient lists to see how they match up. Then buy a small package of store brand supplies to see how you like them.

You may find that the brand name works better and is worth the extra cost, but give the store brand a shot before you make up your mind.

Eliminate odors in the fridge with used coffee grounds

People often use baking soda to keep their refrigerator smelling great, but others swear by something many people throw away every day: coffee grounds.

Just place a bowl of used coffee grounds on a shelf. Then replace them every couple of months. The result will be a fresh, light smell of coffee every time you open your fridge.

Don’t be shy about using coupons

Many people have the misconception that clipping and using coupons is a huge pain. The truth is that you can find them online, in local Phoenix papers, and even in magazines. Check out online sites that compile all the downloadable coupons and subscribe to newsletters from your favorite manufacturers. They’ll often send coupons via email that you can simply print out and use.

Don’t spray your windows – spray the cloth

When you’re cleaning windows or mirrors, resist the urge to spray cleaner all over the surface. Instead, spray it right on the rag you’re using. This will both help you to save on cleaner – which in turn will save you money – and prevent you from leaving extra cleaner behind that will require extra wiping and buffing.

Rags are great cleaning supplies

How many paper towels do you think the average person uses when cleaning Phoenix apartments? We don’t have an exact number but our guess is that it’s a lot! The great news is that you can buy a pack of white cloths, or better yet cut up old T-shirts to make your own rags, and reuse them over and over again when you clean – washing them in between uses, of course.

Take care of your cleaning supplies

If you don’t properly store your cleaning supplies, they can turn into a mess more quickly than you’d guess. Be sure you’re not exposing them to high temperatures or extra light. Store them in a way that their chances of spilling or mixing are minimized. You’ll also want to keep them away from pets and animals. The better their storage is, the longer they’re likely to last.

Use natural cleaners to get your dishwasher sparkling clean

There’s no need to buy those expensive tabs to clean your dishwasher. Instead, put one of these alternatives into the detergent cup and run the machine for a complete cycle. Just make sure it’s empty!

  • ½ cup of white vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons powdered laundry bleach
