Cost Effective Tips for Staying Warm in Your Apartment

It’s that time of the year where the temperatures slowly but surely start to drop. Some days it’s hard to imagine it getting cold in Phoenix but whether we believe it or not it’s time to start preparing ourselves and our Arizona apartments for winter.

Sometimes it’s best to deal with the cold by using layers, so here are some layers you can use for your apartment. Use these tips and your apartment will definitely feel nice and toasty without making you reach for the thermostat, or fear the dreaded electric bill.

LAYER 1: Keep Yourself Warm

Bundle Up

Make sure to wear warm clothes and accessories, especially for your extremities (hands, feet, and head) which tend to lose heat easiest.

Drink Smart, Drink Warm

Drink warm beverages and soups but also ones with caffeine and capsaicin (found in sweet bell and hot chili peppers) which raise your body temperature.

Don’t Stop Moving

The more you move, the less likely you are to feel the cold — because when you are moving your body, your body temperature rises.

LAYER 2: Make Changes

Pay Attention to Those Windows

Taking care of your windows in one of the most important things you can do to keep your apartment warm and there is so much you can do.

  1. Caulk the window frames
Doing this keeps the warm air from leaking out through the tiniest of cracks.
  2. Lock the windows shut
Often, locking windows completely seals them up just enough to keep the cold air from seeping in.
  3. Insulate them with bubble wrap
It’s not the prettiest option, but it does help keep the cold air out
  4. Open the blinds
Letting the sunshine in can raise the temperature in the room. Close the blinds at night to help retain the warmth.

Don’t Waste Your Heat

There is one thing that will definitely waste your warm air and that is an unused room. Make sure to close vents in those rooms so that the warm air goes where it is needed instead.

LAYER 3: Minor Home Improvements

Insulation

You don’t really see it on a daily basis so it’s hard to remember that it’s even there. With enough insulation in your apartment, you shouldn’t feel the cold seeping in through your walls so make sure you have enough. Contact management if you don’t feel these is sufficient insulation.

Upgrade Your Thermostat

This is technically reaching for the thermostat but in a different manner. Investing in a more recent thermostat can keep you warmer and save you money in the long run. Modern thermostats are more efficient in that they can learn your temperature preferences and can also be controlled through an app on your phone. Basically, you have more control of your heat. Be sure to check with management to get the OK before installing it.
